Tuesday Tip: Beware of Scammers

Scammers

Every single day on social media someone on the XCritic team comes across at least one, if not half a dozen fake accounts of porn stars. We do a number of things. We reach out to the actual account if we know it and tell them about it and then we report that account to the social media platform in question. A first clue is a low number of followers. If it is a popular performer you can bet that it will have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of followers, not 3,585 or whatever low number the scammer has managed to rack up in their brief time. That time is also a great clue. If the account was made very recently but the performer has been around for years, that is another sign it’s fake and you should not interact with it. Most performers will NEVER ask you to send them gift cards, or Venmo, or whatever. Of course, there are some exceptions to that rule so double and triple check everything you can before sending them anything. An easy way to do this is to go to IAFD.com and search for a performer. Their actual social media will usually be listed but it may have outdated info so again, do your due diligence. Don’t Get Scammed!
